DTLA is now such a buzzing center of galleries, coffee shops, artists’ studios, bars and restaurants that it’s hard to believe that just 10 years ago this was more of a no-go than a go-to area. The regeneration of Downtown has seen historic buildings transformed into hotels and apartments, housing a young, creative crowd, pulled in by the affordable rents and the world-class art galleries that have moved into the industrial spaces.
Unlike other areas of LA, Downtown has culture and character to spare. Unassuming alleyways will lead you to hidden gems such as St Vincent Court – a European-style cul-de-sac of cafes, delis and shops. You can lose an hour or two browsing in The Last Bookstore, catch a film screening in Grand Park, and then take a restored funicular railway called Angel’s Flight down to Grand Central Market, which hosts some of the city’s best street food options. Plus, the street art scene means there’s almost as much to look at on the outside of the buildings as there is inside.
