From hidden-gems to places to people-watch, from bookshops to beauty spots – here is some inspiration, celebrating the independents in our local neighbourhoods around the world.
This week’s selection has been curated by RIMON, the Eritrea-born music artist raised in Amsterdam. After debuting with a bang in 2018 with ‘Grace’, RIMON quickly made a name for herself as a promising voice in the world of RnB.
After dropping out of school at the age of 17 to travel and create music with composer Samuel Kareem, RIMON and collective ALLE$ Lifestyle started releasing her music independently. Performing throughout Europe and Asia, she started gaining traction, and was covered by i-D, Pitchfork, Vogue, and Complex – as well as amassing millions of views on her debut COLORS session. Her second track with the musical platform, ‘Dust’, was released this week.
FOR FOOD
“I’m obsessed with Betsubara; their tantanmen ramen and especially their ramen eggs. It’s so flavorful and the dish is spicy – I love a good spicy dish.”
FOR PEOPLE-WATCHING
“You see people from all walks of life, from all over the world. I travel alone a lot, so that’s my moment for observing people.”
FOR BOOKS
“The Tate Modern – I love art books, and everything that has to do with art. The history, the process, the artists and context. They have a very cool selection and also sell these books tackling social themes etc. Sometimes I spend more time in their book store than the actual museum.”
FOR WELLNESS
“Soho House Cowshed Spa, for sure. Their massages are so relaxing and I love the tranquillity there – some of their spas even have a pool and sauna. I don’t go as often as I should but when I do, I feel so rejuvenated.”
FOR SHOPPING
“I’ve only been to Seoul once, but the amount of stores I saw that sold clothes I felt really represented my style was crazy.
“They have a good sense of style over there, and are a bit more progressive and less ‘dull,’ too.”
