From hidden-gems to places to people-watch, from bookshops to beauty spots – here is some inspiration, celebrating the independents in our local neighbourhoods around the world.
This week’s selection has been curated by Arwa Al Banawi, the Saudi designer behind the Dubai-based eponymous label that creates contemporary streetwear for “the suitable woman” – her brand slogan.
Having collaborated with everyone from Pepsi Co. to Levi’s denim, Arwa loves to put her own spin on something, as well as fuse modernity with Middle Eastern tradition. And most recently, she created a fresh iteration of the adidas Originals Forum Lo 84 silhouette.
FOR FOOD
“Food is a real joy for me; my mom is a chef and my dad is a real food connoisseur, so I grew up in a family that appreciates food a lot. If I had to pick, I’d say my favourite restaurant would be La Petite Maison as it feels like a second home for me - especially the one in Dubai.
“Another favourite is Aulis in London.”
FOR PEOPLE-WATCHING
“When it comes to people-watching, it has to be either Café de Flore in Paris or Sprungli in Zurich.”
FOR MUSIC
“I love jazz music, and one of my favourite places is Smalls in New York City.”
FOR WELLNESS
“The Spa at Villa Honegg in Switzerland is my favourite go-to place, as well as the Bulgari Spa in Dubai.”
FOR SHOPPING
“I’d have to say Seoul, Korea.”
