At first glance, you might not think ‘lush’ was the appropriate description of Oud West, but with the Rembrandpark to the west and the Vondelpark to the south, it’s pretty much surrounded by greenery. The charming early 1900s buildings here may feel quintessentially Dutch, but the area is actually one of the most diverse in Amsterdam. A veritable melting pot, Oud West is spangled with independent, international grocers and exotic, inviting restaurants, as well as cavernous, glass-roofed workshops and striking interiors shops.
While the area is largely residential, it is by no means sleepy or stagnant. The Bilderdijkstraat, the Overtoom and the Kinkerstraat course with energy and carve out shopping and dining meccas for the design-inclined. So while you think you may have your finger on the pulse of what’s happening in this eclectic ‘hood, you’d better pay attention. Because Oud West is ever-changing and always irresistible.
