It’s a welcome surprise that, despite its diminutive size, Amsterdam still manages to squeeze in so many distinct, diverse neighbourhoods. One of its most intriguing areas – it certainly stands out from the polish of Oud Zuid and the beehive of activity of Centrum – De Pijp is about as cool as they come. Creative energy washes over the narrow streets that wind their way, vein-like, through the neighbourhood.
Beatnik cafés and natural wine bars are peppered along quiet side streets, while just about everyone and everything seems to converge at the Gerard Douplein. In summer, terraces heave with aspiring fashion designers, Dutch fraternity brothers and everyone in between. In winter (which can sometimes feel like eight months of the year), you’ll spot stylish locals cosying up behind steamy windows with a third-wave coffee or a glühwein. But no matter the season, you will certainly encounter a colourful neighbourhood that’s full of life.
